Alon Koppel

Alon returned to photography, his main passion, focus of creativity and a source of income, following a career in design. Alon’s experience as a graphic designer enables him to bring a more rigorous methodology and project-based approach to photography than he previously could and, paradoxically with that, more freedom to explore.

Alon’s work runs the gamut from a rephotography project of historical stereoscopic images to making long exposure photographs of various modes of transportation.

Alon currently resides in Catskill, New York. His Shipping Lane project was selected for an exhibition at Klompching Gallery in New York City as part of FRESH 2023. In 2024 Alon is an artist-in-residence with the Erie Canal, working on a long-term, rephotography documentation project.

Artist Statement

My photography practice centers on key aspects of conceptual landscape photography, emphasizing location, time, and repetition. Grounded in the exploration of the sublime, my recent series “Shipping Lane” and “The Locomotion Series” documents the evolving landscape through meticulous depictions of man-made structures and vessels. It delves into the signs of industrialization, climate change, and the natural progression of seasons. Some of the work references the beautiful landscape of the Hudson Valley and pays an homage to the Hudson River School of Painters. Other recent work explores cutting and collaging with my own photographs of Israel, my homeland, as a creative process of trying to make sense of the chaos and violence in the region.

At Tusen Takk

Born in a small town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea I’ve always been attracted to photographing bodies of water. Tusen Takk’s access to the shore of Lake Michigan will allow me to create long exposures photographs of the surrounding area, documenting the shifting nature of weather and water. I plan on photographing the lake, ships passing and any interesting flora that I come across. Access to photo printers will allow me to freely review my photographs on paper, a welcome change of practice. With those frequent prints I’ll explore creating a series of images of the area, diptychs, collages and more.
