2021 Wrapped

As we head into 2022, we're taking stock of the last twelve months during which we launched Tusen Takk's artist-in-residence program. We're pleased to have hosted an incredible group of people in 2021; a short roundup of their work is below.

In 2022 we look forward to continuing our mission to give artists, writers and composers a time and a place to make the intangible tangible. Thank you for keeping in touch with us!

With gratitude,
Geoffrey, Patricia, Maggie, and Tom

RESIDENCIES
Artist residencies are at the heart of Tusen Takk. This is a special place to reflect and create; the architecture and landscape are beautiful and inspiring.

  • Our residency program launched in March 2021 with our inaugural resident Vaune Trachtman who worked around the clock to print her photogravure series NOW IS ALWAYS, which was subsequently exhibited in 2021 at both the Griffin Museum of Photography and the Vermont Center for Photography.

  • Martin Brief took full advantage of the solitude, the landscape, and the unparalleled light in the painting studio to develop a new body of work, drawings that capture the inherent failure of systems.

  • Nishiki Sugawara-Beda continued work on her KuroKuroShiro series, experimenting in producing and working in sumi ink to create spiritual landscapes.

  • Marianne Shaneen swam in Lake Michigan every day while in residence and continued work on her novel Homing

  • Frank Gohlke started printing a body of photographs that captures the slowly disappearing wild apple trees in the Tian Shan mountains of Kazakhstan, from which all domestic apples descend.

  • Dale Trumbore composed music exploring the effects of climate change, a work that will premiere later this year by the Seattle-based chorus The Esoterics.

  • Jinwon Chang was struck by the light, the darkness, the stars, the Lake, and colors in Northern Michigan; in response, he created 21 large paintings and 80 smaller works - one for each day he was in residence.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

  • Vaune Trachtman led a demonstration in the photogravure process using non-toxic chemicals for faculty at Northwestern Michigan College.

  • Martin Brief engaged local artist (and Tusen Takk pilot resident!) Brianne Farley in conversation, a recording of which is available here!

  • Nishiki Sugawara-Beda mounted an Artist Spotlight exhibition at the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City.

  • Dale Trumbore workshopped several pieces with the Canticum Novum choir (photo left).
